The history behind Valentine’s Day dates back to the third century. In the Italian region of Umbria, people were talking about bishop Valentine of Terni, who contravened the Roman laws of the time by marrying couples in accordance with Christian tradition. When he refused to abandon his faith and put a stop to his actions, Emperor Claudius had him executed.
Rumour has it that Saint Valentine was executed on 14 February, which is why this date has since become so special to couples in his memory.

England’s Valentine’s Day traditions date back to the 16th century when the English writer, Samuel Pepys, is said to have surprised his wife with flowers and poetry on 14 February.
